Mad about Monty
In Christchurch, Canterbury Region, New Zealand
Description
Monty is a Self-Contained Mazda Bongo 2008 2L Automatic Petrol with plenty of living space for a compact camper.
Monty was converted into a campervan in 2017 after I'd had enough of my parents 'sharing' my camper and made them buy their own!
All the furnishings were hand made and custom fit into the van. He was designed so that you are able to sit in the van and still get to everything, as New Zealand weather is very unpredictable. The project has been an evolving process over the past few years and features the jazzy curtains, which were actually taken from a classic VW camper all the way from the UK. We have since added the roof box, or "attic" as my parents call it, and the side awning, which is super useful for those exposed sunny spots where shade is at a premium.
You'll see when you rent it but there are also many other innovative tinkering projects made along the way, such as the hand stitched fly nets which you will most definitely want during those warm Summer nights. I promise you will be thankful when you can rest easy with the windows down at night when you hear that buzzing knowing you are safe in your little safe house.
Me and my partner in crime Susie have now done the finishing touches since we moved down to Christchurch in April and Monty has already travelled in all corners of both islands in New Zealand since. She's seen it all, from mountain passes to deserted seasides, and many more still to explore. Being a self-contained campervan gives you the freedom to park in many places for free without risking a fine.
Most local councils have different rules on freedom camping so check them out on the net when you get somewhere or check them out on any of the heaps of apps available (we used the ‘Campermate’ and ‘NZMCA’ apps).
Monty is registered with NZMCA (New Zealand Motor Caravan Association), hence the need for a Christian name - you need it to be registered.
As you'll see from the pictures Doris is kitted out with all the gear needed for pretty rugged adventures.
- 250L Roof box
- Side awning (super easy to get out and put away)
- Lock box (great for storing keys, money etc when you go for a quick dip in the sea)
- Several interior lights - These have been fitted with Cree LED bulbs to really light the place up.
- Assortment of tools
- First aid kit
- Breakdown pack including tow rope
- Large single hob stove and spare gas tanks
- 2x Camping chairs
- Folding camping table
- Bed linen (duvet, blanket, sheets, pillows and cases)
- 4 sets of Cutlery, Plates, Cups, etc
- Cook pots, Toaster, Pans
- All certified self-containment equipment:
- Fresh water tank
- Grey water tank
- Chemical toilet
- Fire extinguisher
I'm sure there's other things I have missed so if there's something you need I'm sure I'll have it.
Any questions or viewings just message or call me. Monty is based in Merivale, Christchurch, a 10 minute walk from the CBD and 15 minute taxi from the airport.
