Sally's Fab Fiat

In Auckland, New Zealand

Description

OVERVIEW: This classic Fiat Ducato van is, in a recent camper's words, "awesome". At just 5.5 meters long and about 2 meters wide, it's one of the easiest manual vans to drive and park. It's also a great space for up to 3 people to drive & live in.

As of March 2018 the interior has had a bit of a revamp - think a touch of 70's oranges, browns and aquas. Everyone including me is loving the upgrade. The quiet season has also given me a chance to update a load of operational and functional stuff: electrical and gas fittings have been upgraded, the whole front suspension has been replaced, a new gas heater and new safety sensor...and more.

DRIVING: It is A 3-berth vehicle - this means it has 3 legal seats & seat belts that form a bench seat in the front cab. Please note, if only one or two of you are travelling I can take the bench seat out and put in the single passenger seat. This means you can walk through to the rest of the camper - with the bench seat you need to walk round to the sliding side door...unless you love clambering over the seats :)

SLEEPING: There is a large double, super comfortable double bed above the cab. This partially slides away during the day for more cabin space, and sldes out at night. There is a small double (ideally kids or people no taller than 5'7") which can be easily configured from the side facing seats below. Many people just use one of the side facing seats as a single bed for a child. In terms of bedding I always provide 1 x lightweight and 1 x heavier weight duvet, 2 double sheets, 2 single sheets, plus 4 x pillows and pillowcases. There is also a couple of blankets and lightweight sleeping bags to warm up with.

COOKING & DINING: The kitchen area has a good 3-ring burner, perfect little microwave and nice cold fridge/freezer. There is plenty of kitchen bench space and cooking is easy in this high top van. I provide plates, cups, cutlery, glasses, basic tea, coffee, cooking oil etc.

BATHROOM: The shower and toilet are, like most campers, 'cosy' but uber-functional. There's plenty of cold & hot water and adequate pressure to have a refreshing shower. The loo is a 'Thetford Cassette' system. Super easy to use and clean. I provide 3 x towels and bath mat. More towels are available for cash hire. Feel free to ask!

TECH STUFF: This camper has a small power inverter for charging phones, tablets and small laptops. When charging laptops I ask you to 1) charge one device at once, and 2) charge laptops while driving as the power gets really chewed up and I don't want to see anyone stranded by a flat battery! Where possible, charge laptops when you're hooked up to mains power. I provide a great little, very safe power adaptor to plug into a home power point if you find yourself staying at somone's home. Charge smart phones using the lighter port at front or back - works with the engine on and off. When not hooked up to mains, most of the camper appliances, lights etc. are fueled by a mixture of large solar roof panel and 2 powerful deep-cycle batteries, or/and gas. All good for off-grid as long as you've got mobile data and a signal!

All in all, it's a really neat, original campervan that is super-functional, relaible, and a pleasure to drive round the country. There were only 5 made with this shape by Kea in the early 2000's, designed then for 4 people - no wasted space but loads of headroom.

Tips: when dining inside the camper have the side sliding door wide open to really take in New Zealand's stunning vistas.

Pick up is at my home in Mount Eden. This is a great city fringe village about 25 minutes drive from the airport. I can advise on transport to my home where I will show you how the van operates, go through the manual and a quick test-drive to offer some road tips. Pick up time is by arrangement - between 10am and 2pm fine. Camper guests often get the tutorial and paperwork done with me, then walk the 2 minutes up to the village for coffee or lunch/ brunch and a bit of shopping - fresh bread, milk, fruit & vege etc. There is a supermarket 5 minutes drive away too, which I can direct you to.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

House rules

House rules: I have two. When it comes to looking after this Fab Fiat, simply & respectfully do as you would be done by. The other is to relax :)

Travel restrictions are in many ways common sense: avoid bumpy gravel/unsealed roads and avoid steep driveways. Getting down a steep incline is not a problem, but with a campervan's internal weight you might not get back up again! Be sensible and watch your speed and position when cornering - camper vans are tall, long vehicles so be clear on space and momentum.
